Shiseido Perfect Mascara Full Definition BK901 Black | Sample

Shiseido Perfect Mascara Full Definition BK901 Black has a rather thick and semi-wet formulation. I got this sample a while back and couldn’t figure out whose fault it was, that this mascara (which is getting a lot of glowing reviews by the way) just doesn’t work for me. The brush is quite nice but nothing special, I also have a problem covering my lashes with an even layer of mascara (YSL’s Volume Effect Faux Cils Mascara has a similar brush, not as dense though, but my lashes fall nicely between the bristles). After only one coat, the mascara clumps a bit (no matter how much product I have on my brush, I tried every possible amount). My lashes already are black (fine texture, won’t hold curl that easily, normal length) so I don’t need a black mascara for the colour (aka darkening my lashes). After two coats, it just clumps more and I haven’t noticed any major volume nor length. The effect I get from this mascara is nothing a good drugstore mascara wouldn’t do either ( Max Factor for example, which actually works a bit better for me than Perfect Mascara Full Definition). After I have curled my lashes, applied mascara, it only takes about an hour and my lashes look like they have never been curled. I haven’t noticed any budging or smudging though. The pictures below were taken after about half an hour.

Suqqu Kakitsubata / Shiseido Perfect Mascara Full Definition (two coats)
I used my Suqqu Kakitsubata palette here (dark navy blue used as liner and mixed with Shu Uemura M white 907), no foundation/concealer. You also can see my dry skin here a bit (dealing with some skin problems now, sorry for that).

This picture was taken with flash. My curl is almost gone (I am looking upwards, so they appear more curled than they actually are), sticked together lashes, tiny bits of clumps. As you can see here, my lashes are quite thin, I believe this is the major reason this mascara isn’t working for me.
Overall, Shiseido Perfect Mascara Full Definition is a fail for me and I definitely won’t purchase a full size one (that’s why I love samples). The effect I got wearing this mascara was too ordinary for me, the application was quite difficult and the tiny clumps are a no-go for me.

Aww I’m so sorry to hear this doesn’t work for you
I hate mascaras that don’t hold curls with a passion, because my lashes are naturally straight. I can understand the frustration!
My lashes are straight as well but have a fine hair texture, never would have thought that ‘holding a curl’ would be such an issue for me. And I think I need a new curler, mine seems to be too curved for my eye shape
Bummer! Too bad it didn’t work for you! But good that it was only a sample.
I don’t think this mascara would work for me either from your description. I don’t really like wet mascaras and tend to favor the full on lashes look. Thanks for the review!
It is not wet-wet like Bobbi Brown’s mascara rather semi-wet and thick. I don’t mind thick forlumations but this one just won’t work for me. I really was surprised, I read a lot of glowing reviews and was hoping for some ‘magic’ I guess, haha.
Aww
This is one of my favourite mascaras. The other is by RMK. Thank goodness it was just a sample then
p/s love seeing a part of you!
I know right? Love samples
especially deluxe samples, lol (that’s another story, hard to get anyways). Ah, I just took this close-up just so, but it actually turned out quite nice, and I thought, why not posting it, right?
And I really like mascara reviews with swatches as well.
Claire, I’m mesmerized by your eyes, I forgot about the mascara. Mascara Schmascara. You have gorgeous eyes!!
lol, Lily
I find my eye colour weird, it’s blue, then it’s green … then both, lol. Thank you <3
Too bad it didn’t work out but mascaras are a tricky thing! Whenever I see a mascara with a wet texture I already know it’s not going to work out for me, lol. You have such a pretty eye colour btw!
Mascaras are very tricky indeed. Personally, I don’t like my lashes that much they are average and I wish they would be fuller, longer … *sigh*. I just think, there are cheaper and better options out there (but still, loving my YSL mascara). Thank you Teri
Aw, I’m sorry to hear that it didn’t work. I have a love-hate relationship with mascara that usually leans more toward hate. I hate removal! So I often don’t wear it because it just doesn’t seem worth it T_T
I totally understand! I don’t buy any cleansing oils anymore, I use (need) way to much. Baby oil is doing a good job as well. Have you tried massaging pure oil on your eyes? Removes everything on my eyes, including Majolica (in general: japanese) mascaras as well.
Too bad that this does not work for you. I have stopped buying branded mascaras and venturing into Japanese brands/drugstore ones, they work very well for me especially Maybelline’s
I think there are some very nice HE mascaras out there (YSL, Lancome, Helena Rubinstein) but I also like my japanese ones. I have different mascaras for different purposes. But overall I would say, you don’t need to spend a fortune on a mascara.
*runs like the wind from curl-drooping mascara of doom*
But Kakitsubata does amazing things for the green/blue notes in your eyes <3
Thank you Kate. I am so sad they have discontinued it, I hope I will never ever hit pan <3
I’ve never tried Shiseido mascaras, though I do love their eyelash curler. Too bad this one didn’t really work out, I hate it when a mascara clumps my lashes!
I don’t know what it is, that makes my lashes clump, the comb or the formulation but both together are meh for me
